Helpful Tips
Renting a small car is the most flexible way to reach beaches like Cockleshell and South Friars Bay, remember you need a temporary Kittitian driving permit from the rental desk or police station.
The St. Kitts Scenic Railway (the narrow-gauge "Sugar Train") has a 3-hour loop from Basseterre with panoramic views, book directly at the downtown station.
Shared minivans marked 'BASSETERRE, SANDY POINT' or 'BASSETERRE, CAPESTERAIRE' run along the main coastal road. Flag them down and pay the conductor in EC dollars.
From Nevis, the Sea Bridge car ferry departs Cades Bay for Basseterre every 2, 3 hours and lets you stay with your rental car, check the day's sailing times posted at the dock.
Common Scams to Avoid
Taxi drivers at Robert L. Bradshaw International sometimes quote inflated flat rates to Frigate Bay or Basseterre without using the meter. Ask for the meter to be turned on or agree on a fare before leaving the airport zone.
Unofficial porters at baggage claim may grab bags and demand excessive tips for a short walk to the curb. Politely decline assistance unless you need it, and tip only what you consider reasonable for the service provided.
Some airport currency-exchange kiosks advertise 'no commission' but bury poor exchange rates in the fine print. Compare the offered rate against the mid-market rate on your phone before handing over cash, or wait to exchange money at a bank downtown.
